Leader of the Welsh Conservatives and Clwyd West MS Darren Millar has called for clear guidance on drone use in Wales following reports of drones hovering in and around two schools in Ruthin.
Speaking in this afternoon’s Business Statement, Darren expressed concern that the unmanned aerial vehicles are invading privacy and could be putting children’s safety at risk.
Calling for a statement from an appropriate Welsh Government Minister in respect of the use of drones in Wales, he said:
“Many people find drones to be a nuisance, particularly when they invade their privacy in their back gardens and the like. But I had a concerning report from Ruthin this week about drones that appeared to be hovering in and around two local schools in the town.
“Clearly, that is inappropriate. I don’t know why that was happening, or who was operating the drone, but we do need some clear guidance on drone nuisance, and the impact that it has, both on schoolchildren, and their privacy and safety, but also on homeowners and local residents across the country. And I think it’s about time that the Government works together with partners in order to address this problem in order that it doesn’t become more of a nuisance in the future.”
The Trefnydd (Business Manager) Jane Hutt MS thanked Darren for raising “this important issue” and said that Ministers will look into it.
Speaking outside the meeting, Darren said:
“I was extremely concerned to learn of the drone use in and around the schools in Ruthin. Parents and teachers are rightly very concerned, particularly given that they have no idea who is operating the drones and for what reason. I am pleased that the Trefnydd recognised the importance of this and I hope it will result in the Welsh Government taking fast action to produce some clear guidance on their use.”
