Covid-19: Call for answers over ‘Missing’ 84 deaths reported at troubled Betsi Cadwaladr Health Board

Clwyd West AM Darren Millar is calling for “full and honest” answers from Public Health Wales and the Welsh Government as to why 84 Covid-19 deaths went unreported at troubled Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board.

The health board reported 84 deaths in the North Wales area on Thursday, making it look like Wales had seen the biggest daily jump in confirmed deaths to date - 110 - but it included Betsi's figures which were for a whole month.

The health board said the delay was due to issues with its reporting system.

Commenting on the situation, Darren said:

“Yet again it appears that we have another problem with the NHS here in North Wales.

“The failure to provide an explanation for the delay in reporting these deaths is completely unacceptable and it will be impossible for people in Wales to have any confidence in the information being provided when these figures have been so wide of the mark.

“Now is not the time for a lame excuse; we need a full and honest answer from Public Health Wales and the Welsh Government regarding what’s gone wrong and details on what action they intend to take to make sure that it doesn’t happen again in the future.”
