Clwyd West AM Darren Millar is calling on Denbighshire County Council to listen to the views of parents and pupils before making any decisions about the future of primary school provision in the Ruthin area.
Denbighshire's Cabinet has agreed to carry out a review on the future of 11 primary schools across the wider Ruthin area – Ysgol Borthyn, Ysgol Bro Famau, Ysgol Clocaenog, Ysgol Cyffylliog, Ysgol Gellifor, Ysgol Llanbedr, Ysgol Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd, Ysgol Pen Barras, Ysgol Pentrecelyn, Ysgol Rhewl and Rhos Street School.
The plans will affect more than 1,000 pupils at the three schools in Ruthin and although the review focuses on primary provision, the impact of any changes on secondary provision will also be considered.
Darren said:
"It is crucial that decision makers at Denbighshire listen carefully to the opinions of local people and that the social contribution of schools to their local community is not disregarded.
"Schools are the heart of local communities and therefore local communities should be properly consulted and listened to before any decisions are made."
Denbighshire Council will seek to start an informal public consultation in February 2013.
Darren added:
"I'll do everything I can as an Assembly Member to make sure that decision makers take on board the views of parents, pupils, teachers and governors during the consultation process. This review affects so many people in the Ruthin area and it is only right that their opinions are take into account."
