Clwyd West AM Darren Millar has welcomed news that the Welsh Government is working with the UK Government to improve rail services in North Wales, including looking at a direct link to Liverpool.
After being questioned by Darren in the Senedd this week over Welsh Government action to improve transport links between North Wales and the North West of England, the First Minister confirmed that he has been in discussions with the Secretary of State for Wales regarding the re-establishment of a direct rail link between North Wales and Liverpool and over plans to ensure that the North Wales main line is electrified in the future.
Darren said:
"This is very welcome news. I was very pleased to hear that the Welsh Government has finally accepted the benefits that a direct rail service to Liverpool could have for North Wales.
"As a large commercial centre with strong links to North Wales, there is no doubt that improving the transport infrastructure between Liverpool and North Wales would provide a much needed boost to the economy, while shifting passengers from road to rail is also good for the environment."
North Wales has not enjoyed a direct rail link with Liverpool since the 1970s, when it was incredibly popular for shoppers, commuters and tourists.
