Commenting on the Assembly Government’s plans to consult on re-opening the Post Office Development Fund, Welsh Conservative AM for Clwyd West Darren Millar said:
“While any support for post offices is welcome this announcement is too little too late for the branches in Conwy and Denbighshire which are currently facing the axe.
“They need support now if they are to receive a reprieve from closure.
“The decision of the Labour-Plaid Assembly Government to put off the establishment of this fund until after the closure programme in North Wales has been completed demonstrates its lack of commitment to post offices and the communities they serve.
“Post offices provide vital services to vulnerable people. In many rural areas, they are very often home to the only shop in the area.
“The Assembly Government must work harder to ensure the viability of the network instead of throwing out a few crumbs of comfort to those communities facing the loss of such a valuable local resource.”
