Clwyd MS Darren Millar has welcomed Welsh Water's announcement of a £7 million investment in Pantymwyn, which will help protect the local environment and ensure wastewater treatment continues to meet both current and future standards.

The existing wastewater treatment works in Pantymwyn serves homes and businesses in Pantymwyn and Cilcain, treating wastewater before returning it safely to the local watercourse. However, environmental regulations are becoming increasingly stringent, requiring higher standards of treatment. Due to its size and location, the current site cannot accommodate the additional treatment processes required to meet these tighter standards.  

To address this, Welsh Water will convert the existing Pantymwyn site into a pumping station to transfer wastewater to the nearby Maes-y-Groes wastewater treatment works via a new pipeline of approximately 3km. At the same time, improvement work will be carried out at Maes-y-Groes to enable it to treat the additional flows. The pipeline will be installed across private land, with work progressing from Pantymwyn towards Maes-y-Groes.  

The scheme will be delivered by O’Connor Utilities and their subcontractors, with work expected to begin in summer 2026 and be completed by the end of 2027. 

Welcoming the investment in his constituency, Darren said: 

"I very much welcome this significant investment in Pantymwyn and the surrounding area. 

"Such investment is vital if we are to protect our local environment and improve the health of our rivers for future generations. 

"I know that all affected landowners have been made aware of the work and I am pleased to hear that disruption to residents is expected to be minimal, with most of the work taking place on Welsh Water sites and agricultural land, and no impact on water or wastewater services. 

"Overall, the scheme will deliver important environmental benefits by enabling Welsh Water to meet tighter regulatory standards and improve the quality of treated water returned to local watercourses, helping to protect rivers and the wider environment for the future.

"I look forward to seeing this project delivered successfully and  encourage Welsh Water to continue engaging closely with the community as work progresses."
