Leader of the Welsh Conservatives Darren Millar MS and Dr Altaf Hussain, South West Wales MS, visited Brynawel House Rehabilitation Centre last week, which provides treatment for alcohol and drug dependency.
During their visit on Friday, the two politicians met with the CEO, Sue Gwyn, and had a tour of the centre, which is situated in Llanharen, Rhondda Cynon Taff.
Commenting after the visit, Darren said:
"Brynawel does fantastic work to support those recovering from alcohol and drug dependencies and it was a pleasure to visit and find out more about the support packages they provide.
"We met with the CEO, Sue Gwyn, who told us that their experienced team includes trained therapists, nurses, a neuropsychologist, occupational therapists and dedicated recovery support workers, and that together they provide thoughtful, personalised care using a whole-person approach.
"They look at physical health, emotional wellbeing, lifestyle and life experiences to help those they support build strong foundations for lasting recovery.
"Their therapeutic programme offers both one-to-one and group support, alongside meaningful wellbeing activities such as horticultural therapy, art therapy, gardening in their wellbeing allotments, gym sessions, yoga and meditation.
"Living with alcohol and drug dependencies is obviously difficult for the person with the addiction, but it is also challenging for their loved ones, and I was therefore pleased to hear that Brynawel provides family and care support.
"We are very fortunate to have this excellent facility here in Wales, providing elite treatments for alcohol and drug dependency, but more importantly, as we were told on our visit, providing a place of hope, care and new beginnings.
"I would like to thank Sue for the time spent with us and for all that she and her team are doing to support people with drug and alcohol dependencies."
Dr Altaf Hussain said:
"We had a productive meeting discussing Brynawel’s work as a pioneering residential rehab treating those who face addiction, with their dedicated team of professionals enormously experienced.
"As a former Chair of Brynawel myself, I’m proud of their success story. Darren’s wider work on highlighting gambling-related harms especially shows addiction exists in multiple varieties: but, crucially, recovery is possible with enough support.”
