Critical parts of North Wales' transport infrastructure are at risk of coastal flooding, an Assembly Member has warned.
Clwyd West AM Darren Millar has called for flood defence improvements in the Bay of Colwyn to be extended to give better protection to the A55 trunk road and the Holyhead to Chester railway line.
Conwy County Borough Council is currently consulting on a new waterfront scheme for Colwyn Bay to improve flood protection and regenerate the local area, but the proposals do not extend to the Old Colwyn area, where the A55 and the railway line run closest to the coast.
Darren Millar said: ‘The Colwyn Bay waterfront scheme has my full support and I look forward to seeing it completed, but I am concerned that flood defences in the Old Colwyn area are being overlooked.
'Storms such as those over the Easter period last year have given the Old Colwyn promenade a real battering and the defences there have been undermined - it would be utterly devastating if they were to succumb to further damage and put critical road and rail infrastructure at risk.
‘The Welsh Assembly Government must take the lead to ensure the extension of further flood defence improvements as soon as possible.’
