Clwyd West MS Darren Millar has thanked an Opticians in his constituency for providing such a vast array of services after recently paying them a visit.
Darren visited Smith Family Opticians in Ruthin with Optometry Wales earlier this month.
The business was founded back in the 19th century as J Saum & Co.
John and Barbara Smith became involved in 1975 and Kevin and Lorraine, the next generation, are now working to take the business forward.
During his visit, Darren discussed with them the services available under the Welsh eyecare contract, thanked staff, and spoke of how important access to high street opticians is.
Speaking afterwards, he said:
“Opticians play a vital role in maintaining and improving eye health, offering a wide range of services that go far beyond just selling glasses.
“Having visited Smith Family Opticians a couple of years ago, I was already aware of the great services they are providing for the local community, but it was great to catch up with them to find out how they have expanded their offer since I was last there.
“As well as carrying out NHS and Private eye examinations for people of all ages, they also provide Wales Eye Care Services Examinations (more detailed examinations provided free of charge through the ‘Wales Eye Care Service’), and glaucoma screening, which is a normal part of their routine eye examination.
“They also carry out digital retina photography (at their Mold branch), allowing them to keep a permanent record of the appearance of the tissues at the back of the eye, aiding in the earlier diagnosis of eye disease, colour vision testing, and diabetic retinopathy screening.
“They are part of the Wales Eye Care Service for assessing and supplying magnifying aids - optical and where applicable electronic, and carry out a repair service, spectacle fitting and adjustments, and lens supply and fit.
He added:
“This family opticians certainly goes above and beyond, and I thank them for the incredible work they are doing every day - not just in caring for our eyes, but in easing pressure on local GPs and Minor Injury Units.
“Thanks to their expert knowledge, advanced diagnostic tools and compassionate service, many patients are getting the care they need for their eye-related concerns without having to visit their GP or local A&E.
“It is reassuring to know that we can rely on a trusted local team who combine clinical excellence with a personal, family-friend approach, and I applaud them for their great work.”
