Having long supported calls for a speed limit reduction in Denbighshire village Maeshafn, Clwyd West MS Darren Millar has welcomed news that Denbighshire County Council has agreed to introduce one.
Llanferres Community Council and local residents have been concerned about speeding traffic through the village for some time, highlighting the danger due to the lack of footways and the location of the playground.
Darren shared these concerns and wrote to the Denbighshire County Council asking them to lower the speed limit.
Calls for a speed reduction were originally declined, "because the section of road that is illuminated by street lighting is only 110 metres long and therefore falls well below the minimum recommended length for a speed limit which is 300 metres".
However, Darren is delighted that the council has now reviewed the situation and, due to the level of community concern, has decided to provide 20 mph signs at either end of the existing length of road that is illuminated by street-lights.
The signing work is expected to take place within the next two months.
Welcoming the news, Darren said:
"I would like to thank Denbighshire County Council for listening to the legitimate concerns raised by the local community and acting on them.
"I appreciate the area does not meet the usual criteria for installing a 20mph limit, but with the lack of footways and the playground situated where it is, the current speed limit does pose a risk.
"Denbighshire Traffic Officers have made the right decision and I'm sure the local community will be as delighted as I am by today's news.
"I very much look forward to the new speed limit being introduced and the village being made safer for all."
