Leader of the Welsh Conservatives and Clwyd West MS Darren Millar has criticised the Cabinet Secretary for Transport for failing to act on the concerns of residents by addressing traffic speeds on a “dangerous” road in Conwy county.
Darren has long been calling for the speed limit signage on the A5 Trunk Road in Glasfryn to be changed in a bid to improve road safety in the village.
He recently wrote to the Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Ken Skates MS, and asked him to provide a review of the speed limit on the trunk road and was told there are no immediate plans to change the limit.
His response stated:
“My officials have previously reviewed the A5 at Glasfryn against the extant guidance and that work concluded 60mph was the appropriate speed limit for the A5. When the update guidance on Setting Local Speed Limits in Wales is published, my officials will be reviewing all speed limits across the trunk road network including the A5.”
Commenting, Darren said:
“I have been calling for traffic speeds on the A5 Trunk Road in Glasfryn to be looked at for a long time now and it is disappointing that, despite repeatedly highlighting the dangers of this road, we are no further down the line in getting things changed.
“It's currently a national speed limit that goes straight through the village and, of course, if you see street lighting less than 200 yards apart in Wales then the national speed limit is 20 mph but unfortunately, many people assume it to still be 60 mph because it's a single carriageway.
“There is a national speed limit sign directly opposite a children's playing field as you go into the village and 60 mph is an inappropriate speed limit for people in the village to have to face. Lives are being put at risk and this needs to be reviewed now, not in months or years to come.
“The Cabinet Secretary’s response will be a huge disappointment for all the residents in the village who are gravely concerned about this. Immediate action is what’s needed before someone gets seriously injured or worse.”
