Welsh Food and Farming Week visit to Llanasa Farm
Welsh Food and Farming Week visit to Llanasa Farm

To mark the end of NFU (National Farmers Union) Cymru's Welsh Food and Farming Week, Clwyd MS Darren Millar met with local farmers on Friday to discuss the opportunities and challenges facing the agricultural sector.

Darren met with NFU Representatives and local farmers at Ty Draw Farm in Llanasa, which is run by Mathew Roberts and his father David. The Roberts family have been farming for four generations and they won the NFU Cymru/NFU Mutual Welsh Livestock Champion of the Year Award in 2024 for their efficient, data-driven beef and sheep enterprise.

Welsh Farming Week was established by NFU Cymru to celebrate the contribution of Welsh farmers and to encourage greater understanding of the role agriculture plays in producing food, caring for the countryside and supporting rural economies.

Commenting after his visit, Darren said:

"It was a privilege to meet with Matthew and David Roberts to learn more about their farm and I want to thank them for hosting the visit and discussion to mark the end of NFU Cymru Welsh Food and Farming Week. Farmers work tirelessly day in day out to put food on our table and deserve our respect.

"The visit provided me with an opportunity to discuss concerns over the Welsh Government’s Sustainable Farming Scheme, over-regulation, and the need to protect productive farmland from being gobbled up by solar farms and wind farms.

"Welsh farmers are the backbone of our rural communities and we must ensure that farming remains a viable and rewarding career for future generations.

"I thank all the farmers who attended on Friday for finding time in their busy working day to meet with me and outline their concerns. As I told them during my visit, I have always stood firmly behind our farmers and always will."
