Clwyd West Assembly Member Darren Millar lived off rations for the day and took part in a number of challenging activities when he visited the premier patrolling event of the British Army yesterday to gain an insight into military life.
Darren was one of four AMs who visited the Cambrian Patrol in Powys as part of a newly established scheme for AMs to promote engagement and understanding of the Armed Forces in Wales.
The Cambrian Patrol is a two day exercise involving troops from dozens of nations around the world who come to Wales to test their skills.
The Assembly Armed Forces scheme engages AMs with the Army, Navy, Air Force and cadets through a programme of visits to provide an overview of their work in Wales and beyond.
Darren, who is Chair of the Cross Party Group on the Armed Forces and Cadets, said:
“I had a great time during the visit, which gave us a real insight into the incredible skills our members of the armed forces have to have.
“We were provided with kit and rations for the day and took part in activities which included a helicopter flight, a mock rifle battle, and an artillery assault.
“It is impossible to overstate the massive contribution that our armed forces make to keeping our nation safe. They do an incredible job for us on a daily basis and after witnessing and experiencing first hand some of the grueling training exercises they have to endure, my admiration for each and every one of them has increased considerably."
