Clwyd West AM Darren Millar has welcomed the approval of a business plan for a new £18m neonatal intensive care unit in Denbighshire.
Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board have this afternoon approved the business plan for the centre at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd in Bodelwyddan, with Dr Mark Walker from the health board stating it "underlines our commitment to the best quality services".
Darren, who supported the thousands of people who protested against initial plans to downgrade maternity services at the hospital, is delighted by this afternoon’s development and is calling on the Welsh Government to release the resources so that the plans can proceed without delay.
He said:
“It is disappointing that it has taken so long to get to this stage and that the people of North Wales had to take to the streets to overturn previous attempts by Health Board managers to remove doctor-led maternity services and to close the Special Care Baby Unit at Glan Clwyd Hospital. I am sure that all those who took part in the campaign to protect these services will be as pleased as I am by today’s news.
“It is now vital that the Welsh Government get out the cheque book and release the necessary resources so that the new facility can be built as soon as possible. Both the Health Board and the Welsh Government need to make good on their promise to develop this centre as soon as possible. The people of North Wales have waited long enough.”
