Clwyd West AM Darren Millar is calling for more regular dog enforcement patrols to combat dog fouling on a popular coastal path.
Some dog owners are failing to clear up after their dogs when walking them along the coastal path in the Pensarn area.
Following a meeting with local campaigner Bernice McLoughlin this week to discuss the problem, Darren has contacted Conwy County Borough Council to ask for more regular patrols of the area.
He said:
“There are many responsible dog owners out there who are clearing up after their pets, but unfortunately there are a number who are clearly not.
“We are blessed to have such a beautiful coastal path on our doorstep and it is a great shame that people are being forced to have to dodge this mess whilst out enjoying a walk or bike ride along this stretch.
“While the area is patrolled at present, it is obviously not frequently enough to act as a deterrent and I would therefore like to see patrols carried out more regularly.
“Dog fouling isn't just unpleasant it is a health hazard and one that needs to be addressed urgently.”
Bernice McLoughlin said:
“The amount of dog mess along this path is totally unacceptable and is putting people off using it. Any person in charge of a dog who does not clear up after them is committing an offence and could face a hefty fine, but without more regular patrols those responsible will never get caught and the problem will continue.
“If dog fouling patrols were carried out more frequently, then word would soon spread among dog walkers and hopefully it would encourage more of them to act responsibly.”
Conwy County Borough Council currently issue a £100 fixed penalty notice to dog owners who do not clear up after their dogs and persistent offenders can be fined up to £1,000.
