Clwyd West AM Darren Millar has called on the Welsh Government to make property flood resilience grants available to homeowners living in areas at risk of flooding in Wales.
Such grants are already available in England and Darren, whose family home was hit by the devastating Towyn floods in 1990, would like to see them introduced in Wales.
He raised the matter in the Senedd yesterday during Question to Cabinet Secretary for the Environment and Rural Affairs.
He said:
“Thank you for the investment that the Welsh Government has made available to protect homes and businesses from flooding in my constituency. But, of course, individuals can take some responsibility to protect their own properties as well, and you will be aware that, over the border in England, there are grants of up to £5,000 to individual homeowners, to help them make their properties more resilient, but no such grants are available here in Wales.
“What consideration has the Cabinet Secretary given to making such grants available, so that people can accept some responsibility, to support making their own properties more flood resilient?”
Speaking afterwards, Darren added:
“It is regrettable that no such grants are available here in Wales and individual property resilience will only be supported as part of wider schemes if recommended by Natural Resources Wales.
“I will continue to call upon the Welsh Government to make such grants available to those living in flood risk areas.”
