Ysgol Tremeirchion are the winners of the 2008 Design a Christmas Tree Competition organised by North Wales Garden World in Kinmel Bay.
The school topped the class of over a dozen entries from local schools in Conwy and Denbighshire with their Gruffalo inspired Christmas Tree which won a top prize of £100 in vouchers from the popular garden centre. Ysgol Mair in Rhyl came second with their traditionally decorated tree whilst Ysgol Llanddulas with their patriotic Welsh themed tree came third.
Competition judge, Clwyd West AM Darren Millar, said, ‘Judging was a difficult task. All of the trees were decorated to a high standard and the children from the local schools which entered the competition should be proud of what they produced.
‘There were some wonderful themes from the Wizard of Oz and Treasure Island to caring for the environment. The trees must have taken hours to design and create.
‘In the end I was won over by the Gruffalo inspired tree designed by Ysgol Tremeirchion. There was fantastic attention to detail with a Gruffalo sitting on top of the tree, instead of the traditional fairy, and all of the other characters from the book used as baubles – it really was a fantastic effort which fans of the famous children’s book would really appreciate.’
The trees are on display at Santa’s Grotto at North Wales Garden World on St Asaph Avenue, Kinmel Bay until Christmas.
