Welsh Conservative Assembly candidate for Clwyd West Darren Millar is calling for the reinstatement of funding for employer checks to enable young people to go on work experience placements.
Youngsters in Conwy are currently being denied the opportunity to go on work experience because the Welsh Labour Government has cut the funding to Careers Wales for the checks.
Darren said:
“Work experience is invaluable for young people so I was very concerned to be contacted by Ysgol Bryn Elian pupil Ben Walsh who had been advised by his school that there would be no work experience placements this year as funding for employer checks had been withdrawn.
“Having raised this with Conwy County Borough Council and Careers Wales I am advised that the Welsh Labour Government has chosen to cut the funding to Careers Wales for the checks.
“I am therefore calling for the reinstatement of the funding post the election by any new Welsh Government. Work experience is extremely beneficial to young people and they should not be missing out.”
Year 11 student, Ben Walsh added: “I think it is really important that youngsters get to experience the workplace because it educates them for the future. It is disappointing that we are being denied this opportunity.”
