Clwyd West AM Darren Millar, who has been leading a campaign to protect fortnightly bin collections in Conwy, is disappointed that Conwy County Council’s Cabinet agreed yesterday to collect non-recyclable rubbish every three weeks and that four weekly collections are still a possibility.
At a meeting on Tuesday afternoon members voted in favour of three-weekly collections, but will run a pilot of four-weekly pick-ups in one area of the county.
Darren said:
”Whilst three weekly collections are a lot better than every four weeks, many people will still be angry by today’s decision, especially larger families who have a lot more waste to deal with.
“I am also concerned that the Council has failed to consider the impact of three weekly collections on older people. Whilst consideration has been given to households with children in nappies and for those who are eligible for clinical waste collections, those with conditions such as incontinence have not been adequately considered.
“There is likely to be an increased frequency of missed collections with a three weekly collection cycle as remembering the date of a collection will be more difficult than is currently the case and there may well be public health, pests, litter and fly tipping issues to deal with.
He added:
“I am very disappointed by today’s decision and particularly concerned that by deciding to run a pilot on monthly collections, they clearly haven’t ruled out this option.”
