Commenting on the Welsh Labour Government’s statement on the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board being taken into special measures, Darren Millar AM, Shadow Health Minister, said:
“These unprecedented measures are long overdue as this health board has been in a dysfunctional state for years, letting down patients and staff.
“It has been clear for a long time to people in North Wales that the health board urgently needs to address the chronic failings in governance and leadership which were identified two years ago and it’s a pity that Labour Ministers didn’t intervene sooner to address those concerns.
“While I note the suspension of the Chief Executive, many people will be asking why there haven’t been more departures from this organisation. There are senior executives and board members who have been in place throughout these failings and the sooner they go, the better.
“There remain very serious questions about the Welsh Labour Government’s careless oversight of this health board which, although failing for years, has seen little action from Ministers to get to grips with problems and turn them around.”
