Clwyd West AM Darren Millar has called on the Welsh Government to take the lead on improving flood defences in Old Colwyn.
Darren, who has been pushing for improvements along the stretch for years, raised the matter in the Senedd this week with the Minister for Natural Resources.
He said:
“I’m very concerned, and have been for a number of years, at the resilience of the flood defences in Old Colwyn. As you know, they protect the vital transport infrastructure along the north Wales railway line, and the A55 corridor.
“There’s been very little progress in recent years. Meetings appears to be happening for meetings’ sake, with very little progress arising from them. I appreciate that the local authority is the lead agency, but, given the importance of that vital infrastructure for the whole of north Wales, will the Welsh Government now step up to the plate and take the lead on this issue to ensure that these flood defences are upgraded as soon as possible, so that that part of our coast can be as resilient as it needs to be, particularly in view of the sorts of storms that we’re seeing these days and the bad weather that’s forecast over the winter?”
The Minister Carl Sargeant AM said: “It is a matter for the local authority, but I will ask my officials to encourage them to complete discussions in order for investments to be made.”
Darren added:
"I've been battling for improvements to the defences in Old Colwyn for a number of years. Without action, it is just a matter of time before a serious incident occurs.”
