Clwyd West MS Darren Millar has called on the Welsh Government to rethink its Wales-wide lockdown and to take a more targeted approach to addressing the coronavirus pandemic following the publication of localised COVID-19 data by Public Health Wales.
The recently published data shows the number of coronavirus infections broken by local area.
Commenting on the data, Darren said:
“The data published by Public Health Wales clearly shows that Wales-wide or county-wide lockdowns are not proportionate for large parts of the country.
“Areas in my constituency like Ruthin and Betws-yn-Rhos have some of the lowest infection rates in Wales yet residents are being forced to follow the same restrictions as people living in communities with the highest infection rates.
“It is grossly unfair that business owners are forced to close their doors, putting jobs and livelihoods at risk when there have been precious few positive cases in their communities.
“Many employers are already on their knees and this Wales-wide lockdown will finish some of them off. The Welsh Government’s rejection of more targeted measures just doesn’t stack up.
“It is important that we protect people from this virus, but we should protect people’s jobs and businesses as much as possible too. As things stand the Welsh Government’s approach is likely to cause a lot of pain for very little gain.”
