Clwyd West MS Darren Millar has welcomed progress on a new mental health unit for patients in North Wales, but is calling for more to be done to improve mental health services in the region.
Plans have been submitted for a "world class" multi-million pound mental health unit at Glan Clwyd Hospital in Bodelwyddan.
The new building will include two adult acute wards and an electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) suite.
Whilst impressed by the plans, Darren is concerned that a new building alone will not be enough to deliver the progress desperately needed in mental health services in North Wales.
He said:
“While I welcome investment in a new modern mental health unit for my constituents and others in North Wales, a building alone won't deliver the significant change or improvements we need to see in mental health services in the region.
“The Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board remains in special measures and we need a clear plan and a change in culture and leadership in mental health services in order to deliver the change and improvements that we need.
“The Tawel Fan scandal scandal and the independent investigations that followed taught us that we have a system wide problem in our mental services that money alone can't solve.”
