The Shadow Minister for Health has appealed to NHS management to listen carefully to the people of North Wales before making final decisions on reorganisation.
Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board is due to meet and decide on plans for change tomorrow.
Community services face the axe and hospitals stand on the brink of severe downgrading.
The decisions follow significant opposition to the plans in a statutory consultation and previous assurances from the Health Minister that no hospital would be downgraded: "None will be downgraded … I don't want to hear anything about downgrading".
Amongst the proposals is the removal of long-term neonatal care from the region. Families would instead be forced to travel to Arrowe Park Hospital on the Wirral. The British Medical Association, the Royal College of Nursing and the Royal College of Midwifery oppose the plans and a vote in the National Assembly for Wales in September expressed its support for the retention of the services in North Wales.
The neonatal care plans have faced overwhelming public opposition with thousands signing petitions and 71 per cent of respondents to an open questionnaire disagreeing with the proposals.
Shadow Minister for Health and Clwyd West Assembly Member Darren Millar said:
"This hugely significant crossroads will either sweep away local services or give them the importance they deserve.
"I urge NHS bosses to listen to the people of North Wales and scrap plans to downgrade healthcare in the region.
"The Board cannot ignore the views of the BMA, the RCN and the RCM on the issue of long-term neonatal services and must heed the calls of clinicians to retain services in the region.
"Patients should not have to travel further for emergency treatment and bulldozing these plans through – despite significant opposition – would amount to a shocking betrayal of our communities.
"This is a final chance for common sense to return and alternatives to be found.
"Labour’s record-breaking NHS budget cuts have driven this reform agenda. The Minister must be honest about this and ensure that she is accountable for any decisions which are made."
