Clwyd West Assembly Member Darren Millar has welcomed a new initiative which redistributes surplus food and is keen to ensure that local organisations benefit from the scheme.
Tesco have launched a FareShare initiative, which will enable charities and community groups to collect surplus food on the day for free and then use it to provide nutritious meals for vulnerable individuals and families.
Welcoming the initiative, Darren said: “At least 270,000 tonnes of surplus food from the UK food and drink industry could be redistributed to feed people each year, this is enough for 650 million meals.
“I welcome Tesco’s commitment to redistributing the surplus food it has. The perishable food which would otherwise be thrown away will instead help a number of local good causes.
“They are looking for local charities, care homes and other such groups to partner with their FareShare initiative and I urge all groups which fit the criteria to apply.”
In order to receive food, charities and community groups will be assessed by FareShare to ensure they will use the food in the right way in accordance with food safety and handling guidelines. They will need to be equipped to receive, store, prepare and serve food safely.
