With Conwy County Borough Council’s Cabinet set to make a decision on plans to reduce bin collections tomorrow, Clwyd West AM Darren Millar is urging them to ditch the proposals and consider alternative ways to promote recycling instead.
In a meeting two weeks ago, the Council’s Scrutiny Committee agreed to recommend to the Council’s Cabinet that fortnightly bin collections are scrapped and monthly ones introduced.
Darren has been leading a campaign in protest against the plans and hundreds have signed his petition calling for the proposals to be ditched.
He said:
“I am urging the Cabinet to seriously consider the views of the public on this. Since I launched my campaign I have been bombarded by emails, letters and comments on social media from residents who are dead set against these proposals.
“Members need to ditch these plans and consider alternatives to promote recycling and cut waste going to landfill.
“The simple fact is many households will not be able to manage with a four weekly non-recyclable waste collection, especially those with small children or medical conditions and there are many items which are not recyclable at all such as, sanitary products, medical dressings, clinical products and the like.
“These proposals need to be thrown out and the Council needs to go back to the drawing board. Reducing the frequency of bin collections will not promote recycling, it will just lead to problems with odours, litter, fly-tipping and pests which will inevitably cost Conwy County Council more. I appeal to all Cabinet members to see sense tomorrow and ditch these ludicrous proposals.”
