Clwyd West AM Darren Millar has hit out at today’s decision to close the Minor Injuries Unit and x-ray services in Ruthin, describing it as a massive blow to the local community.
Darren, Assembly Member for Clwyd West, has been supporting campaigns to retain services in Ruthin and organised a public meeting to allow people to put forward their views. But in spite of strong public opposition to Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board’s proposals to axe the Minor Injuries Unit and X-ray services under controversial NHS reconfiguration plans, health chiefs have decided to press ahead with the controversial changes.
The health managers insist the proposals will lead to better care for patients, but Darren has expressed concern that the decision will lead to further pressure on NHS services elsewhere.
He said:
"This decision is a kick in the teeth for local campaigners.
"Ruthin Community Hospital is an important part of the health jigsaw in rural Denbighshire and news that it is to lose its Minor Injuries Unit and x-ray services will come as a massive blow to the local community.
"From the public meeting I held, the strong opposition to these changes was clear, with passionate pleas from local residents to retain and, if possible, expand services at Ruthin Community Hospital.
"With A&E departments busier than ever and hospitals bursting at the seams, downgrading community hospitals in this way seems to fly in the face of common sense.
"We have fought so hard in trying to retain these services and it is incredibly disappointing that the Health Board are pressing ahead in spite of overwhhelming opposition."
